Edward J.B. Waltner
Sent to Ft. Riley / Camp Funston (Kansas) on October 4, 1917. Had a certificate to show he was a noncombatant. Was willing to wear the uniform and to work around the camp. Sent to Camp Cody (New Mexico). where he worked in the kitchen. In May 1918 was put in the Remount Division and given military order/s which he could not obey. Was put in stockade and given a trial; sent to Ft. Leavenworth in June 1918. Released on January 27, 1919. Twenty-eight years old on May 4, 1918. Was married. Lived in Freeman, South Dakota. Was a lifelong farmer. Died in middle age in the 1950s.
