[September 1, 1918] Dear Phil:
I received your ever welcome letter. I must confess that you are not far from wrong in your statements. It is indeed true that conditions here are not entirely satisfactory. Four of the men – Even Thomas, Moore, Lunde and Grey, because of these conditions went upon an absolute hunger strike for liberty or death. The four of them are now in the hospital. I must also admit that I too was very much tempted to be with them; so were others – but believe me, I never was on a hunger strike. To make things more apparent
and believable, and this by the way is a fine opportunity for me. I’d be perfectly grateful if Clara would prepare some of her prize cookies for me. I really could enjoy something home made.
I also agree with you that it is absolutely useless to oppress and depress the folks with such news. It only adds to their already crushing burden – and it certainly doesn’t help me.
I have written a special registered letter to Keppel in reference to Julius. I am certain conditions will soon improve and he will soon be having some kind of peace.
Again allow me to assure you that I am not a hunger-striker and if you are doubtful, you can easily satisfy yourself by sending those cookies along. I am sure Clara won’t mind. I hate to burden mama.
Hoping this satisfies you – and hoping you will continue your fine work in comforting the dear folks. I am with kindest regards to Clara, baby Mr. Marcus – etc-
- Dave
