Dear Dave,

Many, many thanks for the candy! It was enjoyed by all. I did appreciate your thought of me despite this belated ackowledgement as evidence to the contrary. Half expecting a letter to follow your burnt offering, I was led to put of writing from day to day until [?] I am quite ashamed and full of apologies. So I hope you will be magnanimous in your judgment.

Recent letters from Briehl, Beer, and Roderick made me feel that your fellows must have met and agreed to surprise your old comrade. If so, you more than succeeded. It was a real joy to know that I was not forgotten. Heard also from [illegible word], Loggins, and Grunzig a few days ago. They were at Berkley [sic], Cal. I imagine that Loggins was [illegible word]! They find it as difficult to settle down as those
