Lieut. Col. Dickinson,
Medical Adviser [sic],
Office Chief of Staff,
Washington, D. C.

My dear Colonel Dickinson:
I am enclosing herewith a statement by a recently released conscientious objector in whose integrity I have confidence. It bears on the medical and sanitary conditions in prison, and you may be able to take up the matter as you once suggested you could do. I have a more extreme statement from another ex-prisoner, who charges in brief that doctors leave too much to orderlies who themselves are prisoners. He charges that a prisoner by name of Burgess, Number 14879, died in the diptheria ward because his throat had been painted with a 50% solution of silver nitrate by Private Benjamin of the Medical Corps, acting as wardmaster; that following this treatment doctors and wardmasters neglected the patient, and his death came only after fearful suffering. It is also charged that necessary food for patients is obtained only after great difficulty if at all; that soiled linen from contagious disease wards is washed without proper disinfectant; that farm colony eggs at Leavenworth are sold at less than retail price, whereas patients

in the hospital get eggs with great difficulty if at all. If you can investigate this matter I shall be glad.

Sincerely yours,

NMT/KW
