Monroe Wulff

Born 1895?; applied to his local draft board for military exemption on August 16, 1917, which granted him a "Certificate of Discharge from Military Service"; was still ordered to Camp Custer for induction; wore the uniform and took part in drilling, but would not carry rifle; refused service in QMC; confined in brigade guard house while awaiting courts martial, which began on May 31, 1918; sentenced to one year of hard labor in prison; sent to Ft. Leavenworth; named on Judge Advocate General's card file entitled CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTOR -- DISOBEDIENCE OF ORDERS: "Accused is a member of the Isrealite [sic] House of David, and in that class commonly called conscientious objectors. He willfully disobeyed an order to sort underwear, in the Q.M.C. Held, this is non-military work. Conviction approved. Op. 7/1/1918"; courts-martial trial #116263; imprisoned at Ft. Leavenworth; part of Group 2 of C.O.s released in Jan. 1919 (those whom "the Board of Inquiry now find sincere and who in their judgment would have been recommended for furloughs if they had had the opportunity of being examined by the Board of Inquiry before the court-martial proceedings"); a member of the Israelite House of David religious colony of southwestern Michigan; as member vowed to live a celibate life, follow a strict vegetarian diet, never cut his hair or shave his face, shun dead flesh [meat], and never take part in or support armed conflict; married fellow Israelite Elna Harris in a group wedding ceremony; died suddenly at age of 41 in 1936; member of the Israelite of the House of David (= Holy Rollers)
