A Word About Transcriptions

Most of the handwritten diaries and letters have been, or will be, transcribed by the end of 2017. It was recently realized that even typewritten or printed pages need to be transcribed in order to tag words throughout and make everything searchable. It is not known how long that will take.

As much as possible, the transcription follows the original. These were done in Microsoft Word, many over ten years ago, and there was no real guide for how to note various anomalies. Likely this will need to be cleaned up at some point.

Scripto, the software for transcription that is connected to Omeka, can be made available to the public to join in the transcribing. If this is open to you, then follow the original text and formatting as closely as possible when you type. If you cannot figure a word out, then put [illegible word] in its place.
